Nicaragua is a beautiful Central American country with a diverse culture rich in heritage, and renowned for its pristine beaches and breath-taking volcanoes, extending from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean.
Nicaragua is a peaceful and friendly country, whose locals will warmly welcome you. In the recent past, Nicaragua has struggled to develop as rapidly and solidly as its Central American neighbouring countries due to a poorer economy and fractured political structure. The recent years in draught has affected the economy, meaning that rural communities whose income relies on agriculture have struggled to provide income for their families. This has resulted in education and good health to be a challenge for Nicaraguans to have access to, especially in rural communities.
As a participant, you will receive guidance from local educators in our partner organization, Project Woo, who are based in Playa Gigante, and will provide support for you on how to assist in planning and delivering educational initiatives to promote good health through community workshops, as well as support broader school-based learning in the classroom. The volunteer work is challenging, but the opportunity to learn about the Nicaraguan culture is incredible. Every day, in some way, you will get to provide locals with the opportunity to progress a little farther in their pursuit an improved way of life and learning.
Efforts this year will focus on further development of health education for the community, as well as teaching English and enhancing a local immersion program. This will be a collaboration with local youth to build a sustainable, ongoing Youth Club that will provide a healthy outlet for youth to come together and participate in surf lessons as well as continued English classes, arts and crafts, cooking and a variety of other activities.
Other teaching activities will focus on implementing a curriculum on good health, hosting monthly health fairs, and other outreach activities to provide education to the local community. If you are pursuing your TEFL certification, this will be an incredible opportunity to put your teaching skills into practice.
Through your engagement in the leadership workshops, you will learn from local leaders and each other as we develop a deep teaching and learning connection with others, which is essentially what it’s all about. EDventure collaborates with Project Woo to provide assistance in health education, teaching or with the building, painting, or other helpful activities here within the community.
Your own leadership skills will be shaped and strengthened whilst creating a lasting, positive change in these communities. During your time in this community, our qualified facilitators will assist you on your path of personal development to ensure you feel the positive impact of the deep connection you develop within the community, as well as apply your leadership skills directly to the needs of this community. An invaluable life experience will be gained along with a sense of achievement in an environment where your volunteer efforts and leadership abilities truly matter.
This is about more than learning to speak Spanish, learning to surf, or working in local community health centers and schools. It’s about more than learning about and eating new local food. It’s about challenging yourself to live in a foreign country, and rise to many challenges and immerse completely in the local culture.
This is what the EDventure International programs are about. In Nicaragua, a country so vibrant with life and sun, beaches and lakes, and local people who are so warm and friendly, the possibilities and ways in which to push your own boundaries are seemingly infinite.
Nicaragua boasts beautiful topography, from pristine beaches to pointed volcanos. The climate is tropical, hot and sometimes very wet, but you’ll appreciate the country as much as the locals do, and take an easy-going outlook to life. Fishing with the local fishermen, baking bread with local women in the rustic village, and hiking to scenic views overlooking the coast, or playing football with the local kids on the beach.
As you tour the colonial streets, walk along dusty roads through farmland, soak in the sun, and surf the waves, you’ll find yourself becoming more engrained into the community, and learning more about the world and yourself than you had imagined.
Please be advised some modifications may occur to this itinerary to ensure the safety and quality of the program. The following will provide you with an overview of your upcoming EDventure to Nicaragua.
Orientation – We will participate in a variety of activities to help you become familiar and comfortable with the local environment and location. We will also discuss your volunteer project and ensure you have a full understanding of what to expect and how to get the most out of your EDventure experience.
You will be introduced to your new home for the next few days, you will be able to settle in, explore and embrace the true Nicaraguan lifestyle of this tropical paradise.
Today we will also develop some perspective on the journey you are embarking on by engaging in a workshop designed to introduce you to ‘Global Leadership’. In this workshop we will address your personal leadership skills, get to know our fellow EDventurers a bit better, and prepare for the leadership opportunities you will find in the upcoming volunteer activities.
This will be an incredible opportunity to put your teaching skills into practice as you deliver educational games to the local school children, and collaborate with the local youth to build a sustainable program that provides a healthy outlet for the youth. In addition, you will also get the opportunity to implement a curriculum on good health, host a health fair, and participate in outreach activities to provide healthy living education to the local community.
During these days of volunteering and engaging with the local community, you will participate in a second ‘Global Leadership’ workshop. This session will build on your new found perspective developed from your first week engaging in your volunteer project and will focus on your leadership skills at the social level.
Although you will be very busy, you will still have opportunities to experience your new environment, take a stroll on the beach, relax with everyone and share stories, and maybe record a few of them in your journal. You will be encouraged to immerse yourself in local culture by engaging in traditional cooking classes, fishing trips, and historical village tours. There will also be opportunities to learn to surf and explore Nicaragua’s old Spanish cities.
Additionally, your volunteer experience could include Spanish lessons. These language lessons are geared towards helping you to communicate with the local people that you will be interacting with every day and will enable you to have a more fulfilling cultural experience during your EDventure program.
Waking up to the sounds of the jungle and possibly a morning stroll along the beach will spark up your senses as you realize you are certainly somewhere special.
Take the afternoon to tour the local community and enjoy the breathtaking tropical beach location that surrounds us.
Some of these activities include trekking up majestic volcanoes, hiking through picturesque waterfalls, and exploring the Nicaraguan coastline! All of this will be even more enjoyable with your great group of new friends you have bonded with throughout your EDventure.
We will build on your new perspective developed from the previous two weeks participating in your volunteer project as we engage in a ‘Global Leadership’ workshop focusing on cultural leadership skills.
Feel free to take advantage of some additional activities, like sand-boarding down a volcano, or exploring a new part of this incredible country. You will also have an opportunity to go on a hike, take a stroll on the beach, go for a swim, or kayak to a nearby island. These days are yours for discovery, relaxation, and exploration.
